Abundance as a Positive Response to our Current Challenges
I have been delving into this concept of abundance lately. It is a concept I first learned through teachings about Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as it was related to mindfulness and distress tolerance. An abundance mentality is one where you believe that there will always be plenty to go around – plenty of resources that everyone competes for, such as relationships, money, jobs, power etc. It also helps you reflect on what you have in abundance in your own life already. When people become aware of this abundance mindset, they are often awe-struck by the possibilities and it can be very empowering.
I liked this article because it relates to our current situation, living in a pandemic: “with so many people worldwide in quarantine at home, alone or with their families, and naturally concerned about health, economic security and the timeline of their return to routine, a focus on the power of spiritual abundance can serve as a positive resource to draw upon”.
In this article, from a spiritual context, abundance is less about material conditions, and more about appreciating life in its fullness. It is about cultivating respect for the creative energy of the universe. “An abundant life is one that leaves negative feelings of lack, dissatisfaction and emptiness behind. Instead, it is open to light and love that comes from a more spiritual domain”. This resonates with me as a CBT therapist as it relates to the way we think about ourselves, others, and the world around us. When we think negatively or view the world through a negative lens, this decreases or depresses our mood. When we focus on positive thoughts, such as those of abundance, we have the ability to lift our mood and we notice the good in the world once again.
This article also offers ways to create a more abundant and peaceful lifestyle, such as meditation, yoga and using ambient sounds to induce calm. Hey, it’s worth a try!
